Lower Energy Price Cap, Higher Bills?

The Energy Price Cap is down, but energy bills are still up?
Ofgem has announced that the Energy Price Cap is finally decreasing by 7% in July 2025.
This Cap will be valid for the next three months starting from 1 July to 30 September 2025. For a typical household on both gas and electricity that is paying by Direct Debit this translates to £1,720 per year. Savings on energy bills are estimated to be £11 per month.
However, if we compare the same July-September period in 2024, we can see that homeowners are going to pay 10% (£152) more in 2025 (£1,720) than they did last year (£1,568).
Despite the announcement, these numbers still do not bear good news for homeowners looking to reduce their energy bills.
Why are my fuel bills still going up?
Even though the rate has decreased by 7%, we need to consider that the Cap went up by 10% in October 2024, 1% in January 2025, and 6% in April 2025.
In summary, despite the positive news, homeowners will still need to be mindful of their electricity and gas usage. That is because the Energy Price Cap is not a cap on the total amount you pay. Instead, it caps the daily standing charge for each unit of gas or electricity you use, which means the more you use, the more you will be charged.
