What is changing for the winter fuel payments in 2024?
It has now been announced by the government that only pensioners who are on certain benefits will be receiving winter fuel payments to alleviate their energy bills in winter 2024. This news will leave around 10 million pensioners affected according to the BBC.
Those that are not on pension credit or other means-tested benefits will not be eligible which means they will be missing out on an annual payment ranging between £100 and £300.
Are you eligible for pension credit?
To be able to meet the eligibility criteria, you need to be above state pension age and earn a weekly income of less than £218.15. For those living with their partners, the joint weekly income should be less than £332.95.
Additionally, factors, such as your savings, will be considered which means that even if your weekly income is low and meets the criteria, your savings could make you ineligible.
How to prepare for the rising energy bills in winter
With winter fuel payments becoming less accessible, there are other methods you can use to make sure your home remains warm and comfortable without spending a fortune on energy bills.
Viridian operates under the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) which provides the opportunity for free or partially funded home insulation works if you are eligible. Learn more and see if you qualify for the scheme on our dedicated GBIS page.
Insulation has always been a desirable long-term investment for many of our customers to ensure their annual fuel bills remain low and home – comfortable. The process is stress-free, with no fuss and mess, and it doesn’t have to cost much, especially if you are eligible for GBIS funding!
Struggling to afford your fuel bills?
If paying off your energy bills still remains difficult, do not hesitate to get in touch with your supplier to make appropriate arrangements for future payments. You may also be eligible for certain supplier schemes and grants along with further government support according to Ofgem.
